From Television to Idiot Box.From DD to Cable

Yesterday was the 50th anniversary of Doordarshan or rather, television broadcasting in India. On the occassiom, here was a wonderful documentary on DD about the evolution of television in India. There were clips from old time DD productions like Hum Log,Buniyaad,Tamas,Mirza Ghalib etc.
Seeing those clips made me realize the amazing amount of crap that passes as entertainment these days. And also the transition of 'television' to 'idiot box'.How did we move from 'Tamas',which raised the issue of communalism in India,to 'Rakhi ka Swayamwar'.When did interviews by Noam Chomsky get replaced by those of Payal Rohatgi. It's indeed a sad state of affairs. The only kind of people you see on TV today are hyper/boorish/dancing punjabis(and being one myself,I seriously can't tolerate another ounce of pseudo punjabis on TV/films) or funny accented South Indians, overtly traditional women or out rightly evil/westernized vamps. When was the last time you saw an Assamese doctor or a Muslim engineer or a Punjabi intellectual. Why can't TV move out of stereotyping. And yes I agree, private channels have to market to consumers but can't the messages be delivered in a subtle manner.
Until then all I can say is,'Is Jungle se mujhe bachao'

bang on dude, its not like one enjoys bashing Indian TV, but then these guys seem to come up with crappier stuff every year. i think some shows which deserve mention are - Surabhi, Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai [few ppl host shows like Farooque Shaikh], KBC [and I'm talking about the Big B ka seasons] and Mastermind India [it never compromised with quality which BQC did towards the end]

One can only hope n pray that guys like us get rich enough soon to start our own networks and rescue Indian TV ;) What say?

and whats worse is that they work!!! Don't really know how, but well somehow...
And in my opinion the only contemporary show that deserves a special mention as probably being a good TV show would be-
sarabhai v. sarabhai

sarabhai vs sarabhai is actually good.. but even thats being done away with now.. n in its place hs come up another reality show.. i guess our choices differ a lot from the aam janta in india.. even though people like us(not a very well defined set) find only some part of our tv shows or music to our taste, that is not the case with the populace.. i had just attended my cousin's wedding in my home-village and they seemed to love songs with lyrics worse than roshez's poetry.. (for eg.. 'missed call marta hu, kiss de du kya...').. quite obviously, i was not very interested in listening to such songs.. one of my cousins came up to me and said, ' gaane achhe nahi lage kya bhaiya.. aap to inglees gaane sunte hoge..' not knowing that most of the music used in bollywood(and bhojpuri) songs and the basic themes for his favourite tv shows have been copied from the 'inglees' industry..

The maximum information lies in minimum words
so how can tons of channels give sense
somewhere we the janata has also to take steps to stop paying crap, just because it is affordable......
